6 Steps To A Perfect Spring Lawn Cleanup
Do you want your lawn to look green and fresh this summer? Then it all comes down to how you care for your lawn in the spring. A day or two spent on lawn cleanup now will pay off in the long run. Here are the six steps you can take for a perfect spring lawn cleanup.
1. Rake up lingering leaves.
If there are any fallen leaves still kicking around on your lawn, use a flexible rake to rake them up now. They need to be gone in order for the sun to reach the grass.
2. Rake up dead grass.
After raking up the leaves, switch to a sturdy garden rake — the kind with straight metal teeth. Use this to rake up any dead, brown grass that is sitting against the ground. This grass can cause a few problems if you leave it. Not only does it block the sunlight, but it can attract grubs and bugs.
3. Trim the edges.
Use a weed trimmer to trim back any old, dead grass along the fences, garden beds, and other structures. This will help eliminate places for rodents and insects to hide, and it will make the whole yard look tidier.
4. Sprinkle a pre-emergent weed treatment.
There are a couple of different types of weed killers. One type is called an emergent weed killer, and it addresses weeds that are already growing. This is not the kind you want to use in the spring. You want to use a pre-emergent weed treatment, which will keep the weeds from germinating in the first place. These are usually granular formulas; you sprinkle them over the lawn and then wait for it to rain.
5. Apply fertilizer.
Fertilizing the lawn early in the spring will make sure the first emerging blades of grass are nice and strong. Make sure you use a fertilizer formulated for grass, as formulas for flowers and vegetables may not contain the right amount of nitrogen.
6. Have it rolled.
This step is the only one that's not always necessary. If your yard is already flat and even, feel free to skip this step. But if it is uneven, paying a landscaping company to come roll it will help it look its best. It will also keep people from twisting their ankle as they walk across the lawn.
Follow the six steps above, and you'll have a lawn to be envied.
