Springtime Lawn Preparation: 3 Things You Shouldn't Do

Now that the weather is starting to get nicer, you might be thinking about heading outdoors and getting your lawn ready for the summer. Doing so is a great way to ensure that your lawn looks its best this year, but make sure that you don't do these three things when getting your yard ready for the warmer weather.

1. Skip Raking

You might be thinking about cutting your lawn, which can chop up leaves and other debris and make your yard look a whole lot nicer. However, even if you do choose to do so, you shouldn't skip the raking process. Raking will help you get rid of dead leaves and other debris, which will make your lawn look even neater. The main reason to do so, however, is to get rid of any debris that might inhibit the growth of your grass and plants. If you don't remove debris, it can prevent your plants from getting the sun and moisture that they need.

2. Remove Mulch

Be careful about removing mulch from your flowerbeds during the springtime. The temperatures might still get cool in the evenings, and the mulch is great for protecting plants that are attempting to bloom. Wait until your plants start to bloom and the weather warms up before removing mulch and replacing it, or add a layer of new mulch on top of the existing mulch for added protection and a fresh look.

3. Rake Roughly Around Your Plants

Even though you should definitely break out your rake when preparing your lawn for the warmer weather, you should be careful about raking roughly around your plants. The springtime can be a rather fragile time for many plants, which are attempting to bloom but can be a bit less hardy due to the recent cool temperatures. When raking debris away from your plants, do so gently, and avoid raking into the soil too much so that you don't disturb any seedlings or root systems.

Now is definitely the time that you should start working on your yard, particularly if you want it to look its very best this summer. However, there are some things that you shouldn't do if you want to preserve your plants and ensure that they look their very best when the weather warms up. Avoid doing these three things, and you are sure to notice a difference in how beautiful and healthy your lawn looks this year.
